The Dex, as it was called initially, is the Oxford Dictionary of Romania. It has been for dozens of years by students, teachers and normal people alike, to look up words and see their meanings. With the development of the internet, Dex has also appeared online: dex online roman. The dex online roman is as comprehensive as the hard cover Dex is. In 2004, a group of volunteers finished transferring the Dex dictionary on the internet. The dex online roman has 65532 definitions, almost 1300 pages and 14 million characters. If you want a comparison, the Bible has only 4 million characters. The idea was very good because less people nowadays spend their time looking up words in the dictionary and finding out their meaning. It is far easier to search online. You just Google the word and the first page is dex online roman. The site is very comprehensive and complex, with a client program where you can download the entire data base. This is very good for those that do not always have an internet connection and so they can benefit offline from this dictionary. This idea is also very good for Romanians that live abroad. While they probably did not carry the old DEX with them, the idea of an internet Romanian dictionary is quite good.

There may be children that go to Romanian schools and they need to read books and develop their knowledge. If you do not know what a word is and you do not have a good dictionary, how are you supposed to find out? The idea also appeals to foreigners that are learning Romanian as a foreign language. Managing an internet dictionary is easier than using a hard cover dictionary. You just type in the word and you get the results. Some can get lost in the big book. Dex online roman is also a very permissive language, with a lot of meanings and words for the same thing. An online dictionary will most probably give you a better response than a normal hard cover one, because you can skip the word in a normal dictionary (the lettering is very small, there are a lot of descriptions). We also have to remember that we are forever evolving and we have to adapt the old ways of living into new, technological ones. If the ideas are possible, why shouldn't we adapt them and apply them?
